Lonie Or Lonnie Hinton

Lonie Or Lonnie Hinton

ALTON — Lonie Kenneth Hinton, Sr., 77, departed this world Saturday, Sept. 26, 2020 at his home.

He was born Aug. 14, 1943 in Alton, Illinois, to the late James Hadley Hinton and Christine (Williams) Hinton.

He attended Alton High School and received his diploma in 1960; and enlisted in the United States Air Force from Oct. 1960 – Oct. 1964.

Lonie attended basic training in Biloxi, Mississippi, where he studied as an Air Traffic Controller at a time where there were not many African American's in those positions.

After basic training he was deployed to the Canadian Province of Newfounland and Labrador. He took pride in manually calculating his mathmatical equations; where his fellow soldiers used calculators.

After an honorable discharge from the Mililtary, he returned to Alton, Illinois, and worked at Laclede Steel for 30 years, retiring in 1993.

Lonie enjoyed vacationing in Las Vegas, Nevada, reading, sports, and barbequing with his special sauce.

He loved his home, spending time with his family, and a good laugh.

Lonie was preceded in death by Special friend, Jackie Edwards; Sisters, Dorthy Hinton, Barbara Stewart, and Linda Price; Brothers, James Hinton, Donald Hinton, and Freddie Hinton; Son, Ronnie Edwards; Stepson, Ricky Brooks; and Granddaughter, Angel Lynn Edwards.

He leaves to cherish his memory his Children, Lonita Hinton, Lonie Hinton, Jr., Jason Edwards, and Briauna Edwards-Scruggs; Son-in-law, DuRon Scruggs; Step-children, Susan Bailey and Samoan Brooks; Grandchildren, Ariana Ronald, Destiny Miller, Jayvion Edwards, Ja'Dae Edwards, and Jayla Edwards; Brothers, Larry Hinton, Robert Hinton, and Anthony (Tony) Hinton; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Acknowledging special friendships with the mother of his children, Corrine Lunsford and Jackie Edwards.

NOTE Editor's Speculation: :  He got his diploma by GED at AHS after he moved to Alton (from Brentwood, MO) in 1993. His family put up the obituary so he must have considered the Class of 1960 his class. Maybe some of you met him along the way. Marilyn Waide Lake for In Memory

I didn't know Lonnie because I had left Alton many years before he arrived in 1993. But his life speaks for itself. He was a credit to AHS's GED program.  It takes a lot of courage and and desire for a diploma to go back for a GED after 33 years. Good for you, Lonnie! May you rest in peace.

This whole thing gets more complicated, the more I look into it.  The obituary in the Telegraph lists Mr. Hinton as SENIOR, but gives the same birth date as for the person below in an entry that I found on Ancestry.com and is JUNIOR.  Surely, senior and junior don't have the same birth date!  Very likely it was his son, Lonie Jr., who moved from Brentwood, back home with his parents, in 1993.  He may also have been the one who got the degree in 1993.  But if so, the the public records have got the birth date wrong.

The Alumni directory gives the first address on Belle Street for Lonnie Hinton and gives the date of his diploma as 1993.  He is not listed in any of our yearbooks.  I found a class picture for a Lonnie Hinton at Joliet Township High School, and he is in all of their yearbooks from 1956 to 1959.  HOWEVER, there is also a Lonnie Hinton who was born in 1938 in Joliet.  But surely he wouldn't still have been in high school in 1959 in that case?  OK, I'm confused, and the last thing I want to do is disrespect a man who seems to have been an admirable person, with a fine mind, who served his country and always worked hard. My condolences to his family on their loss, and that's about all I can say.

I do want to walk back what I wrote to Marilyn earlier that there was no doubt the person in the Joliet yearbooks was the same one as in the Telegraph obituary.  After 60 years, one can't be sure it's the same person.  I have temporarily posted the picture at my university website and will take it down in a week or so. You can look at it during that time:

Hi Carol!  That is an excellent suggestion!  I wonder Lonnie Hinton actually went to school in Alton, MO.  (And why didn't I think of that myself??!!)

Hi Sylvia,

Well, this gets to be a mystery.  The Alumni Directory lists 14 people named Hinton, including three women for whom Hinton is the married name.  There is no Laura among them.  But Lonnie K. Hinton is definitely in the directly, listed as having graduated in 1992 (not 1993, as I wrote earlier).  But none of the 14 is in any class near 1960.  The one in the directory is probably Lonie, Jr.

I tried following up on Carole's good idea, using ancestry.com, but got nowhere with Alton, MO.  I may try looking at the website of Alton (MO) Sr. HS.  I like solving mysteries.

One of the reasons that I do the obits is because when I started this, there were zero on the website, just a lisst of names. It is interesting how long it took me to find the info on some folks. I'd just like to find someone in our class or later, who knew Lonnie/Lonie iin some capacity in later life, after he moved to Alton in 1993.

The family put up the obit i n The Telegraph, and I think we should go by what they say. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
