Remembrances of Maynard White from Larry Donahue

I knew Maynard, we were team mates at East Jr. and at AHS. He was a nice soft spoken guy who had a lot of athletic talent.

The basketball team we had at East Jr.,  was very good. Mr. Mathews said it was the best he ever had, and they had some good ones. In our warm up drills before the game we would come out and everyone would go in and jump at the rim to try and touch it.

Most Jr. High teams were lucky if they had one guy would could touch the rim, we had six, I could get both hands on the rim,but Maynard could put his hand up inside of the small square that is painted on the backboard. I remember those days as if they had happened yesterday, how I loved them.

I have a picture, or at least I did, of Maynard, Herschel Epps and myself standing together at the Big Dupo Sophmore Track and Field meet. Mike Yavorski made up the fourth person of our record setting 880 yrd. relay team, but was not around at the time the picture was taken. [When Larry sends the picture to me, I will post it. My Memories of Maynard White

I am so sadden to hear of Maynard's passing. It was a shock to say the least. It has been awhile since I have seen him; yet my memory of him as a quiet, thoughtful, and sometimes funny teen is clear. I always thought he was the epitome of the strong, silent type. It is a shame that I never shared with him that I had a crush on him. There is one thing I know for sure; don't wait to tell someone you care about them and they were important to you. I missed my chance a few months ago. I am reminded of this passage by Katha Upanishad,

"When the five senses and the mind are stilled, and

the reasoning intellect rests in silence, then

begins the highest path."

Let us celebrate Maynard's life. He is on to higher path. My deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones.

No wonder we ran so fast, we were lean mean running machines, but that was a lot of years and pounds ago.

This is Maynards site, but I would like to say something about both of the wonderful guys in the picture. I feel so very lucky to have had those guys as team mates, class mates and friends. I have never forgotten them nor shall I,they were the best of the best. Until later on guys
