WOOD RIVER

Fred Edward Shaw, Sr., died January 12, 2008 at Chirsitan NE Hospital, St. Louis.  Mr. Shaw was born to the Burdette Shaw and Dorothy Shaw in Alton on March 11, 1941.

When Fred was in first grade at Milton School he was hit by a car and a leg was shattered, keeping him out of school long enough that he was kept back in first grade the next year, in the same class with his younger sister Lynda. He was a smart boy and caught up quickly, surpassing some of his younger classmates. He attended East Jr. High School and played football. He was well liked throughout school.

In 1959 Fred dropped out of AHS and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in California. After the Marines, where he got his GED, Fred went to Arizona State University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy. He always loved working with plants and gardens. Fred married a girl he met in California, Lois Wexler, and they had three children. The first marriage did not last,  and he married his second wife Barbara,  with whom he had two children.

Fred made his living as a plumber and doing personal landscaping as well.  At the time of his death he was retired.

According to his surviving sister, Lynda Shaw Mundy, also a member of the AHS Class of 1960, Fred did beautiful landscaping work and was multi-talented, drawing portraits, painting, and doing sculptures.

Besides his sisterm, Lynda Shaw Mundy of Alton, Fred is survived by his mother, Dorothy Shaw-Benecke, Alton; his second wife Barbara Shaw, Alton; three sons: Lynn Shaw, Quincy IL, Fred E Shaw, Jr., Alton IL and Brent Shaw, Arizona; two daughters Jamie Shaw Greer, Godfrey and Debbie Shaw; nine grandsons ,one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter, and a great- niece.

Fred Shaw was cremated and his ashes kept by his family.

I remember Fred from Jr. High on, he was always fiendly and lots of fun to be around. To the best of my recall, I think Fred played on Milton 6th grade basketball team as a guard next to Stan McAfoss. They also had Jim (Tiny) Robinson on that team and they were the City Champs. Now that is to the best of my recall, its been a long time ,but I think I am correct. There are so many I wish I could see again, and Fred is one of them.
