Richard “Dick” Marion Knight, 71, died at 4:05 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, at his home in Alton.

Born Nov. 15, 1941, in Fairmount, W.Va., he was the son of Allen Martin and Mabel (Rudy) Knight. Mr. Knight was a member of Brown Street Baptist Church in Alton. He retired from Owens-Illinois in 2004 after 45 years of service as a machinist/inspector. He was an avid bowler and belonged to a league at Bowl Haven until 2013. Following hurricane Katrina, he worked as a volunteer in Biloxi, Miss. It was a very special time for him. On Jan. 18, 1964, he married the former Frances Dodd. She survives.

Also surviving is a daughter, Tamara Cochran (Jim) of Delhi, two sons, Andy Knight (Elisa) of Groves, Texas, and Mike Knight (Salli) of Goose Creek, S.C. (Mike is currently stationed in Gulfport, Miss); eight grandchildren, Mackenzie Cheney and special friend Nathan Rucker, Mitchell Cochran (Nicole), Chris Knight (Samantha), Corey Cochran, Courtney Knight, Michael Knight, Allen Knight, and Truman Knight; one great-granddaughter, Hailey Knight, and one sister, Barbara Prather (Ronald) of Edwardsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rebecca Knight.

Visitation was from Thursday, Nov. 14, at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15. Pastor Danny Holliday and Mr. Ed Funkhouser officiated. Burial was at Upper Alton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brown Street Baptist Church Building Fund, the Varsity or Junior Varsity Basketball Team Scholarship Fund at Alton High School, or to BJC Hospice.

I knew Richard from school, but not real well. I wish I would have gotten to know him better because his life of caring for others shows me he was a good man. I used to see Richard at A.H.S. basketball games, so his school spirit stayed strong. My sympathy goes out to his Family.
