Mike Smith

Mike Smith

Michael “Mike” Smith graduated to Heaven on Monday, May 24, 2021 after a years long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Mike was born in Alton, Illinois to “Smitty” and Vera Smith. He graduated from Alton High School then attended the University of Missouri School of Mines at Rolla (now known as Missouri University of Science and Technology), where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering, and after graduating, he worked for Caterpillar, Inc. for his entire career.

He was married to the love of his life Alpha Galliher Smith for 55 years. They lived in a myriad of places including Peoria, IL; Oklahoma City, OK; Elmhurst, IL; São Paulo, Brazil; Dallas, TX; Denton, TX; and Grapevine, TX, where they made many close friends throughout the years.

In his retirement years, Mike enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and RVing across the country. His two favorite places to RV were Port Aransas, TX and Estes Park, CO. He especially loved taking RV trips with his children and grandchildren.

Mike is survived by his wife, his brother and all of his family, his 3 children and their spouses, and his 7 grandchildren.

Family was very important to Mike, so in lieu of flowers please make donations to Kentucky Mountain Mission, the mission board that supports Youth Haven Bible Camp in Eastern Kentucky, where his nephew and wife minister to the families in the area of the camp.

I'm so sorry to hear about Mike's passing! Alpha's  tribute to him in Randy Hausmann's In Memory is truly touching. I know theirs was a great love story!! Anyone can tell it from the photos on his profile on this site. I  only met Mike at the 50th reunion but from then on, he communicated with me several times and we always mentioned Alpha. I so appreciated the way he participated in the class still. What a great guy! I'm glad I knew him if only for a few short years. May he have much rest and joy in Heaven! My deepest sympathy to Alpha and MIke's family and close friends.

Another one gone, even before Randy, and so close together with his bosom friend Randy.  I always admired Mike; he was always friendly, and had the kind of down-to-earth good sense that I value highly.  We were not close friends, but good friends nevetheless.  I'm very sorry he's gone.

The reason I am just now posting this, is I thought I had done it a long time ago, so here goes.

Mike was a favorite guy from the class, he was extremely likable , a combination of humerous, serious, and down to earth type of guy. I.m sure when Alpha brought him home to meet the family they said ,You made a good choice he's a keeper.

As Roger says " the ranks a getting thinner"  and thats a shame
